Phishing

« Back to Glossary Index

Phishing is a cybercrime technique that aims to obtain confidential and personal information (access accounts, passwords, credit card numbers, banking information, etc.) by posing as a trusted third party. This allows the fraudster to impersonate the victim.

For example, it is common for the fraudster to make a copy of a website that is identical to the original in order to make the victim believe that they are really there. If the victim is careless enough to enter their personal information, the fraudster who created the fake site will be able to access the victim’s personal data and steal everything the victim has on the real site.

This is why it is always important to verify the URL of a site before providing sensitive information.
