Web users sometimes use files and images posted by someone else by using hyperlinks to that person’s server to post them directly to their websites without their permission. This practice is called “hot-linking” or “bandwidth stealing“.

It is highly desirable to protect against this practice, as it can ultimately cause slowdowns on users’ websites.
