Redemption Period

« Back to Glossary Index

The registration of a domain name is valid for a specific period. This period varies according to the organizations that manage the domain name registries. At the end of this period, it is possible to renew the domain name. If the holder does not renew, the domain name falls back into the public domain. In order to compensate for possible oversights, many domain name registries offer a redemption period.

During the redemption period, the domain name is blocked to protect its previous holder, giving them time to reactivate the domain name before it falls into the public domain.
