SSL Certificate

« Back to Glossary Index

An SSL (Secure Socket Layer) certificate is one of the most important security elements for anyone who owns a website or blog. Indeed, it is responsible for encrypting the information exchanged between a page on a web server and the Internet user, which in turn guarantees the confidentiality of personal and professional data.

Technically speaking, an SSL certificate is a data file that links a cryptographic key to the information of an individual or an organization.

The certificate is installed on the server and activates the padlock and the HTTPS protocol, which secures data exchanges by encryption between a web server and the user’s web browser.

By default, an SSL certificate from Let’s Encrypt is automatically generated for all domain names hosted on PlanetHoster. EV and OV SSL certificates are not free.
