How to Put my Site Online with FileZilla

Introduction

This tutorial explains how to copy files to the FTP server and how to copy files from the FTP server to your computer.

The Different Areas of the FileZilla Window

We present the Filezilla main window zones here, as we will be referring to them later.

AThe message history displays messages relating to transfers and connections.
BOn the left, Local site displays local files and folders, i.e. those of the PC on which you are using FileZilla.
COn the right-hand side, Remote site displays the files and folders of the server to which you are connected.
DDetailed list of the contents of the selected folder.

At the bottom of the window, the Transfers area displays lists of files awaiting transfer, failed transfers and successful transfers:

Uploading Files from Your Computer to the FTP Server

Now that you have mastered FileZilla a little better, you are ready to transfer your files to your web space.

  1. First, in the Local site area, display and select the folder containing the files you wish to send to the server.
  2. Then, using the folder list in the Remote site zone, select the destination folder on the server.
  3. To send the data, select the files/folders in the Local site zone, and drag them to the Remote site zone.
  4. You will then notice that these files/folders have been added to the list of queued files at the very bottom of the window, and that they will then disappear from it, as they will have been copied to the server.
  5. Files and folders are now displayed in the Remote site list on the right-hand side of the window.

If you do not like drag-and-drop, you can also right-click on files/folders (in the Local Site sone) and select Send to send them, or even just double-click on a file (this does not work for folders, though).

Downloading Files from the FTP Server to Your Computer

The procedure is identical to that for copying your files to the server, except that you need to right-click on the files displayed in the Remote site area. The menu then changes slightly:

You’ll also see files currently being downloaded in the download area.

Access to Files On Line

Now that you know how to put your files online, it is worth finding out how to access them.

To do this, simply launch your web browser and type in the URL of your site. If you have stored your files in a sub-folder, you will need to add the folder name to the end of the URL, followed by the name of the file you are looking for.
